Definitions, types, and application of regulations
Cookies are small text files that the websites visited by the user send and store on their computer or mobile device, to be retransmitted to the same sites on subsequent visits. Thanks to cookies, a site remembers the user’s actions and preferences (such as login data, preferred language, font sizes, and other display settings) so that these do not have to be indicated again when the user returns to the site or navigates from one page to another.
Cookies are used to perform computer authentication, session monitoring, and to store information regarding a user’s activities when accessing a site. They may also contain a unique identification code that allows tracking of user navigation within the site for statistical or advertising purposes. Certain operations could not be performed without the use of cookies, which in some cases are technically necessary for the functioning of the site itself.
For more information about cookies and their general functions, users can visit informative websites such as www.allaboutcookies.org.
Cookies can be those set directly by the site or web server that the user is visiting, or those of the website whose address was typed and displayed in the URL window (so-called “first-party cookies”).
During navigation on a site, the user may also receive on their device cookies from sites or web servers different from the one being visited (so-called “third-party cookies”). A third-party cookie is referred to when a user visits a website and a third party, other than the operator of the visited site, releases a cookie through it, owned by third parties.
There are also various types of cookies, depending on their characteristics and functions, and they may remain on the user’s computer for different periods: so-called session cookies, which are automatically deleted upon closing the browser; so-called persistent cookies, which remain on the user’s device until a predetermined expiration date.
According to the applicable regulations in Italy, user consent is not always required for the use of cookies. In particular, so-called technical cookies do not require such consent, that is, those used solely for transmitting a communication over an electronic communication network, or to the extent strictly necessary to provide a service explicitly requested by the user.
Among the technical cookies that do not require explicit consent for their use are:
- First-party analytical cookies, used to collect information in aggregate form on the number of users and how they visit the site itself;
- Third-party analytical cookies, when tools are adopted that reduce the identifying power of cookies and the third party does not cross-reference the collected information with others it already possesses;
- Navigation or session cookies, used to authenticate and access a service;
- Functionality cookies, which allow users to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (e.g., language, selected products for purchase) to improve the service provided to them.
For profiling cookies, on the other hand, which are aimed at creating profiles related to users and are used to send advertising messages in line with their preferences expressed during web browsing, prior user consent is required. User consent is also required for third-party analytical cookies when tools that reduce the identifying power of cookies are not adopted, and the third party cross-references the collected information with others it already possesses.
Types of cookies used by the Site
The Site uses the following types of cookies:
- Technical navigation or session cookies, strictly NECESSARY for the operation of the Site or to allow the User to enjoy the requested content and Services. They are used solely for transmitting a communication over an electronic communication network, or to the extent strictly necessary for the provider of an information society service explicitly requested by the user to deliver that service. These cookies are strictly necessary for the operation of the site or to allow you to enjoy the requested content and services. Among technical cookies are navigation or session cookies (used to authenticate and access the service).
- Functionality cookies, which are used to activate specific functionalities of the Site and/or to configure it according to the User’s choices (e.g., language) to improve the browsing experience. They allow users to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (e.g., language, selected products for purchase) to enhance the service.
- Analytical cookies, which allow understanding how the site is used by users and track incoming and outgoing traffic. They are used, among other things, to evaluate the effectiveness of an information society service or to help measure the site’s traffic, that is, the number of visitors also possibly broken down by geographical area, connection time slot, or other characteristics. For their activation, when tools that reduce the identifying power of cookies are not adopted and the third party cross-references the collected information with others it already possesses, user consent is necessary.
- Advertising or profiling cookies, used to observe the preferences that the User reveals through the use of the Site and send, to the same User, advertising messages in line with those preferences. They are used to relate to specific identified or identifiable subjects, specific actions or recurring behavioral patterns in the use of the offered functionalities (patterns) to cluster different profiles into homogeneous clusters of varying size, so that the owner can, among other things, also modulate the service provision in an increasingly personalized manner beyond what is strictly necessary for the provision of the service, as well as send targeted advertising messages, that is, in line with the preferences expressed by the user during web navigation. User consent is required for their activation.
Please note that by disabling navigation, session, and/or functionality cookies, the Site may not be browsable, or some Services or certain functions of the Site may not be available or may not work correctly, and the User may be forced to modify or manually enter some information or preferences with every visit to the Site.
The cookies used by the Site can be viewed by the User.
